THE ALLOTMENT GARDENER’S COOKBOOK

Our neighbour came round with a surprise gift yesterday. It was a copy of a book called “The Allotment Gardener’s Cookbook” which he’d been recommending for some time but had been unable to find details about the publisher or author. There’s a book with the same title published by Reader’s Digest, but the one our neighbour recommends is written by Ann Nicol and published by Kerswell Books Limited. His sister found a copy whilst on holiday, but now that we know the author there appears to be copies available on eBay and other online sites.

Having spent most of last night looking through it, we can see why it was worth tracking down. The recipes are all based on crops that can be easily grown or sourced in the UK, and fit into what we’d describe as good, straightforward homemade cooking. I’m sure it’ll inspire a few of the recipes we post when this year’s growing season is underway and it’s already having an influence on our seed order – since we’ve realised that we should make one or two additions to the order we placed a few weeks ago.

We’ve added it to our list of recommended books and will keep you posted about its influence in the City Smallholder kitchen.
